Magnolia’s Day Got Weird Fast

Magnolia was supposed to be waiting for a family. Instead, the little black-and-white kitten ended up in the middle of an attempted bank robbery in Maryland.

The 3-month-old tuxedo kitten was taken from an adoption area inside a Pet Supplies Plus store in Beltsville on July 13. A man then carried her across the shopping center to a nearby PNC Bank, according to NBC Washington and other local reporting.

Then He Handed Over the Kitten

Inside the bank, the man asked a bank employee to hold Magnolia while he wrote a note for a teller. The note demanded cash, according to reporting on the case.

Police arrived quickly and arrested the suspect. Magnolia was found safe inside the bank manager’s office, and no injuries were reported.

The strange sequence made the kitten an internet favorite almost overnight. People joked that Magnolia was either an innocent bystander or the real mastermind. Magnolia, naturally, did not comment.

Her Next Problem Was Much Better

Once Magnolia was safely back with Beltsville Community Cats, a much nicer problem appeared: a lot of people wanted to adopt her.

The rescue group said it received 21 applications. That is far more attention than many rescue cats receive, and Magnolia’s bizarre trip to the bank had clearly made her famous.

The group did not simply pick a new fan. It chose the local applicant who had already asked to adopt Magnolia before the robbery story spread online.

She Found the Quiet Life

Magnolia went home with Kaylei Roldan and her family in Laurel, Maryland. She also got a young cat companion named Kuro.

Recent reporting says Magnolia now has the kind of routine she was originally looking for: toys, treats, naps, cuddles and a cat tree. Her Petfinder listing now shows her as adopted.

Beltsville Community Cats later joked that Magnolia had retired from her life of crime. After one pet-store escape, one bank visit and a burst of internet fame, a quiet home probably sounds pretty good.
