Bank of America credit and debit card data from the first four months of 2026 shows cruise spending rising across every income group - the only travel category where lower-income household spending grew while airlines and hotels fell. The data point is notable. It also requires a careful reading before anyone books a ticket.

What the Numbers Show

Bank of America Institute’s 2026 Summer Travel Outlook, published in May, documented a clear divergence. Lower-income households saw year-over-year spending declines in airlines, lodging, and tourism overall. Cruises were the single exception, with lower-income households increasing spending by more than five percent. Middle and higher-income households increased cruise spending by approximately 10 percent.

Total monthly cruise card spending grew 8.4 percent year-over-year in May 2026. Expedia projects 21.7 million Americans will cruise in 2026. Mediterranean sailings are up 255 percent year-over-year in search interest.

The explanation the data suggests: predictable, bundled costs. A cruise fare covers the cabin, meals, and most onboard activities in one number. When travelers are watching budgets, knowing the baseline cost before boarding has real appeal.

The Number That Is Not in the Advertised Fare

Advertised cruise fares - some starting under $199 per person for Caribbean sailings - do not include the following: port taxes and fees ($100-$300 per person), automatic gratuities ($18-$25 per person per day), airfare to the embarkation port, shore excursions, specialty dining, beverages, and the internet package.

A couple booking a seven-day Caribbean cruise at an advertised price of $599 each may reasonably spend $1,800-$2,200 per person once the full trip is built.

How to Build the Actual Budget

Get the port fee total from the booking screen before confirming. Multiply daily gratuity by the number of nights and add it to your total. Price airfare to the departure port separately. The bundled-cost advantage of a cruise is real - the advertised fare advantage is not.
