Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie spent nearly a decade fighting over custody. In the end, neither side won a final courtroom victory. Their twins turned 18, California courts lost jurisdiction, and the case expired. The calendar did what their lawyers could not.

There was no final hearing, no sweeping ruling, and no settlement that resolved the years of conflict. The custody chapter ended on July 12, 2026 - the day Knox and Vivienne turned 18 - while the former couple’s $164 million winery war continued on a separate legal timeline.

The Divorce That Became a Decade-Long War

The conflict began in September 2016, when Jolie filed for divorce. What followed was a decade of sealed filings, contested hearings, and public legal maneuvering over custody and visitation for their six children. During the litigation, their older children - Maddox, Zahara, Pax, Shiloh - reached 18 and aged out of the jurisdiction one by one, before the twins brought the final orders to a close. Three of those older children publicly took steps to distance themselves from Brad Pitt’s name during the proceedings, according to court filings and prior reporting. The custody conflict produced no winner, but it produced a documented record.

How the Calendar Ended What the Court Could Not

Under California Family Code Section 3022, a court loses jurisdiction over custody and visitation the moment the last minor child reaches adulthood. As of July 12, Knox and Vivienne are legal adults with the right to decide where and with whom they live. No court can issue or enforce a visitation schedule for them. There is no renewal, no extension, and no appeal - the authority ends by operation of law.

The Chateau Miraval case - a $164 million legal fight over the French vineyard the couple once shared - continues with a 2027 trial date. Pitt scored a court win in that case earlier this year. Jolie is contesting. Property division issues run on a different legal clock from custody under Cal. Fam. Code Section 2550. That clock is still running. The custody dispute is over. The financial one is not, and Pitt and Jolie’s legal relationship will continue in that arena for the foreseeable future.
