Everyone Goes to New England for Fall Color. These Places Deserve a Look Instead

Fall color in America does not start and end in New England. From Anchorage in late August to southern Utah into early November, the season stretches across far more of the country than the usual Vermont circuit suggests.

Forbes published a rundown of eight of those places on August 10, built around the argument that the country’s foliage map extends well past the New England circuit that absorbs most of the attention and most of the peak-season room rates.

The Season Opens in Alaska

Anchorage gets there first. Golden birch and aspen turn against the Chugach Mountains starting in late August, and darker nights bring the return of aurora viewing, creating a brief overlap between fall color and the Northern Lights.

Santa Fe follows. The aspens in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains run mid-September through October, and the Aspen Vista Trail and the Santa Fe National Forest Scenic Byway both cut directly through the color. La Fonda on the Plaza sits on what the hotel describes as the oldest hotel corner in America, a block from the historic plaza.

Where the Aspens Turn First

Estes Park peaks in late September, and the timing is not incidental. Visit Estes Park says the elk rut typically begins in mid-September and lasts about a month, which means the aspens and the bugling arrive together, and Trail Ridge Road climbs through both.

The bugling starts at dawn and can carry into the night. Visit Estes Park recommends watching from the edge of Moraine Park or another mountain meadow, and notes that harems of 30 cows with a bull or two are not unusual on the town’s golf course lawns.

Reno Tahoe holds late September into October, with golden aspens framing the alpine lakes and the Truckee River. The Monkey Rock trail and Rancho San Rafael Park are the closest access points to the color.

Hot Springs, Virginia peaks in the first week of October across more than 2,000 acres of the Allegheny Mountains. The Omni Homestead Resort runs naturalist-led interpretive hikes, and the Cascades Gorge Hike is the main trail.

The Reservation That Still Applies in October

Rocky Mountain National Park requires a timed entry permit through October 12, 2026, with the Bear Lake Road corridor permit running through October 18. Standard timed entry covers 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily; the Bear Lake Road permit runs 5 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The timed-entry reservation carries a $2 Recreation.gov processing fee, separate from the park entrance fee or pass required to enter Rocky Mountain National Park. Entrance runs $35 for a private vehicle for seven days, or $70 for a park-specific annual pass. Permits release on a monthly schedule with additional slots posted nightly at 7 p.m. Mountain time, and once inside the two-hour window, visitors can stay as long as they want.

For travelers arriving during the reservation window, overlooking that requirement can derail a carefully timed peak-color visit.

Zion Closes the Season in November

Springdale, Utah runs last. Cottonwood, maple, and oak hold from mid-October into early November against the red rock at Zion, and The Narrows stays walkable well into the window.

Philipsburg, Montana is the quietest entry on the list and the most self-contained. It sits along Rock Creek in the western Montana river valleys, where golden aspens, cottonwoods, and willows run across more than 2,000 acres of ranchland, and the fall draw is what the season makes possible rather than the color alone: scenic drives, horseback riding, and fly fishing on a creek that empties out once summer ends. The Meadows on Rock Creek operates as a boutique all-inclusive guest ranch on the property.

Kohler, Wisconsin is the one built for people who do not want to drive far. It sits an hour north of Milwaukee and two and a half hours from Chicago, which puts a color trip inside a weekend for anyone in either city. The 800-acre River Wildlife Nature Preserve carries the foliage, and the resort side of town adds championship golf and the Kohler Waters Spa.

Peak color shifts every year with temperature, rainfall, and elevation. Travelers planning around a specific week should check state or local foliage reports as departure approaches rather than relying solely on historical averages.
