A California judge has given former boxing champion Wladimir Klitschko temporary authority to safeguard property belonging to the late actor Hayden Panettiere, after a court petition raised concerns that some belongings could disappear before their daughter’s inheritance was secured. Their 11-year-old daughter Kaya is Panettiere’s sole heir, according to the Associated Press.
Judge Stephanie Santoro approved Klitschko’s appointment as temporary guardian of the child’s estate in Los Angeles County. The order addresses property and legal responsibilities, rather than permanently settling who will administer Panettiere’s estate. Klitschko and Kaya joined the hearing remotely. The girl appeared on camera alongside her father, the AP reported.
Why the request was urgent
The probate petition was filed September 28, more than a week before the temporary order. In that filing, Klitschko asked the court for immediate authority to respond to reports that personal property had been removed from Panettiere’s Los Angeles home. ABC News reported the application described unauthorized people entering the residence and valuables that could not be accounted for. The September filing and October 8 hearing are distinct stages of the same probate matter.
Klitschko’s attorney told the court that property was being collected by federal agents investigating Panettiere’s death and that a person outside the family had allegedly removed items, including jewelry, and tried to sell them. Those concerns were presented in the petition; they are not findings that any particular person committed theft. The attorney said legal authority was needed to communicate with investigators and a pawnshop and to prevent assets from going unaccounted for.
There was also a routine but time-sensitive obligation: Panettiere’s tax filings needed attention. The temporary guardianship provides a person recognized by the court to address estate matters while a permanent administrator is selected. Without that role, questions about custody of belongings and required documents can become more difficult to resolve.
A daughter at the center of the case
Separately, the Greenville Police Department announced October 28 that its investigation into Panettiere’s death was closed after the death was ruled accidental, according to People. That development does not determine ownership of any items held by investigators or the outcome of the California estate case. The probate court’s limited order remains about safeguarding the inheritance of a child, not adjudicating the circumstances of her mother’s death.
Panettiere, remembered for her work on Heroes and Nashville, died in South Carolina on August 16 at age 36. A coroner’s report obtained by AP attributed her death to an accidental overdose involving several drugs, including fentanyl. Klitschko has had primary custody of Kaya for much of her life, and she has lived with him in Ukraine.
Klitschko and Panettiere became a couple in 2009 and were once engaged. The estate proceeding does not resolve their former relationship or the wider circumstances of the death investigation. It is focused on preserving assets for their daughter. Panettiere’s mother supported Klitschko’s request, according to AP.
The court’s immediate solution is intentionally limited. Klitschko can act to protect qualifying property, but a longer-term administrator still must be appointed. The reported pawnshop concern and custody of any items held for investigation may require separate follow-up. For Kaya, the legal question now has a temporary answer: someone with court authority can act on her behalf while the estate is organized.
