Isaias Remnants Bring Inland Tornado Threat After Gulf Coast Deaths
Erin Calloway
Updated Oct 13, 2026
The remnants of Hurricane Isaias were carrying a fresh tornado and flooding threat into the southeastern United States on Sunday, two days after the storm struck the Florida Panhandle. At least four deaths were reported in Florida and Alabama, while communities along the Gulf Coast continued clearing fallen trees and damaged infrastructure.
The storm’s worst coastal winds have passed, but its inland weather system has produced additional hazards. The threat was shifting toward the Carolinas and Virginia after storms in Georgia and South Carolina.
Gulf Coast Communities Begin Cleanup
Isaias came ashore near Destin, Florida, on Friday as a Category 2 hurricane, according to Associated Press reporting. It damaged buildings, uprooted trees and interrupted power service in multiple states.
Sunday reporting placed outages at nearly 328,000 customers in the region, a changing snapshot rather than a cumulative measure of everyone who lost power. Restoration crews continued repairing lines and removing debris where conditions allowed.
A New Tornado Threat Develops Inland
As the remnants moved inland, tornadoes were reported across parts of eastern Georgia and southwestern South Carolina. The Washington Post described a shifting Sunday severe-weather risk along the North Carolina-Virginia border, including areas around Raleigh and Richmond.
Flooding also affected parts of the central Appalachians and mid-Atlantic, prompting rescues in North Carolina. The remaining risk depended on local rain bands and thunderstorms rather than the hurricane-force winds experienced at landfall.
Officials Focus on Rescue and Recovery
Emergency responders were assisting communities with flooding and storm damage while utility crews worked to restore service. Local warnings and road conditions remained important as the system continued northeast.
