Jimmy Buffett Left a $275 Million Trust. His Widow and Trustee Are Fighting Over It

Jimmy Buffett built a fortune around an image of easy living. Three years after his death, a trust estimated at $275 million has become the center of a fight between his widow and the longtime business manager he chose to help oversee it. Jane Buffett is the trust’s sole beneficiary, while Richard Mozenter serves as co-trustee, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The Trust Was Supposed to Support His Wife

Buffett created a marital trust for Jane Buffett and placed Mozenter, his longtime business manager, alongside her as co-trustee. The arrangement gave his widow the financial benefit of the trust while leaving major decisions in shared hands.

The dispute is now about how that structure is being run. Jane Buffett has accused Mozenter of mismanaging the trust and treating its assets as though they were available for his own control. Mozenter disputes that portrayal and has argued that Buffett had concerns about his wife’s ability to manage money, according to the Journal.

A $275 Million Fortune Is Not All Cash

The trust includes holdings tied to Buffett’s businesses, real estate and other assets, meaning the headline value is not the same as cash sitting in an account. That matters because the fight includes questions over distributions, control and how much income the trust should generate for Jane Buffett.

The complexity also raises the stakes of who makes decisions. A large estate built from brands, property and long-term business interests can require choices about what to hold, what to sell and how much money to distribute.

The Family Fight Has Become Public

The disagreement has also pulled Buffett’s daughter Savannah into the conflict. The Journal described bitter exchanges among family members as arguments over the trust spilled beyond accounting and into questions about control of Buffett’s legacy.

Neither side’s allegations have been resolved by a court. What is established is that the structure Buffett created to manage his fortune is now being challenged by the people he placed inside it.

A January Trial Could Decide Who Controls the Next Chapter

The dispute is moving toward a January trial. Until then, the central question is not how much Jimmy Buffett left behind, but who gets to decide how a $275 million trust is managed for the woman he named as its beneficiary.

For a performer whose business empire was built around escaping conflict, the final structure he left behind has produced exactly the opposite.
