King Charles Put Harry and Meghan's Royal Status in Writing After Their Return

Prince Harry and Meghan have returned to live in Britain, but the move does not restore their old royal jobs. A letter sent on behalf of King Charles III to senior officials reaffirmed that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex remain non-working members of the royal family.

They came back to the United Kingdom, but they did not return to working royal duties.

What the Letter Reaffirmed

The letter restated the arrangement that has been in place since Harry and Meghan stepped back from official royal duties in 2020. Their charitable and commercial work remains private rather than work carried out on behalf of the monarch.

It also reaffirmed that the couple do not use the HRH styles in their working lives. They continue to be known as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

The communication was distributed to government, military and civic officials who may encounter questions about protocol now that the couple are again living in the U.K.

Why the Palace Put It in Writing

A physical return to Britain creates practical questions that were easier to avoid while the Sussexes were based in California. Officials may need to know whether an appearance is a private event, whether royal courtesies apply and which institution handles a request.

The letter gives those officials a written answer: residence in Britain does not change the couple’s non-working status or turn their private projects into official royal engagements.

The Security Question Is Separate

The letter does not award or deny publicly funded police protection. It says operational security decisions are matters for the relevant authorities, keeping that issue separate from the couple’s royal working status.

Harry has spent years challenging decisions around his security arrangements in Britain. The new letter does not resolve that dispute simply because he and Meghan have moved back.

What Their Return Actually Changes

The most visible change is geographic: the family is again based in the United Kingdom. The institutional arrangement established in 2020 remains in place.

Harry and Meghan are back in Britain. What King Charles has now put in writing is that returning home does not make them working royals again.
