Missouri Used One Map in August. Its November Map Became a Supreme Court Fight

Missouri voters used one congressional map in the August primary. A court fight then raised the possibility that the state could use a different map for the November general election.
The dispute reached the U.S. Supreme Court after Missouri’s highest court said an older map should remain in effect while voters consider a referendum challenging the newer lines.
Why Two Maps Are in Play
Missouri lawmakers adopted a new congressional map in 2025. That map was used for the August 2026 primaries and was expected to improve Republican chances of winning seven of the state’s eight U.S. House seats instead of six.
Opponents gathered signatures for a referendum challenging the new map. The Missouri Supreme Court ruled that the petition was legal, sufficient and timely, and said the 2022 congressional map remains operative unless voters approve the newer one.
That ruling created an unusual election problem: candidates were nominated under the 2025 lines, while the general election could be conducted under the earlier map.
Missouri Asked the U.S. Supreme Court to Step In
State officials filed an emergency application asking the U.S. Supreme Court to let Missouri use the 2025 map while the legal fight continues. Justice Brett Kavanaugh set an expedited response deadline over the Labor Day weekend.
The speed reflected the election calendar. Officials need enough time to finalize ballots, assign voters to districts and prepare for the November election, so uncertainty over district boundaries cannot remain open indefinitely.
The dispute is not only about which party might gain a seat. It is also about whether a map already used to nominate candidates can be displaced before the same election cycle is finished.
What This Means for Missouri Voters
The practical question is which congressional district appears on a voter’s November ballot. A change in district lines can change the candidates a voter sees, the communities grouped into a district and the contest that determines who represents that area in the U.S. House.
Because the Supreme Court filing is an emergency request, the status of the map can change quickly before Missouri finalizes ballots for November.
