Presbyterian Health Plan Is Dropping Most Medicare Advantage Plans for 2027

Presbyterian Health Plan is expected to discontinue most of its Medicare Advantage plans for 2027, affecting roughly 30,000 members. For people in plans that are ending, the important issue is not simply finding a new insurance card - it is understanding what coverage replaces the old plan if no new choice is made.

The change is part of a broader contraction in Medicare Advantage as insurers reduce products or leave selected markets. But the decisions are plan- and county-specific, so members should first confirm whether their exact Presbyterian plan is affected.

What Happens When a Medicare Advantage Plan Ends

Medicare says that when a Medicare Advantage contract is not renewed, members can switch to another Medicare Advantage plan. If they do not join another Medicare Advantage plan before the old plan ends, they are enrolled in Original Medicare.

Original Medicare includes Part A hospital coverage and Part B medical coverage. It does not automatically recreate every extra benefit that may have been bundled into a Medicare Advantage plan, such as routine dental or vision benefits.

Prescription drug coverage also needs attention. A person returning to Original Medicare may need a separate Part D drug plan if they want Medicare prescription coverage and do not have qualifying drug coverage from another source.

Doing Nothing Is Still a Coverage Decision

That is why the phrase “do nothing” can be misleading. Coverage does not simply vanish, but the type of coverage can change automatically when a plan ends.

A member who prefers another Medicare Advantage plan needs to compare the plans available in the service area, including premiums, provider networks, drug formularies and supplemental benefits. Someone considering Original Medicare may also want to review Part D and Medigap options and the enrollment rules that apply to them.

The Enrollment Window Is Broader Than One Date

The annual Medicare Open Enrollment period runs from Oct. 15 through Dec. 7. People whose plan contract is not renewed can also qualify for a Special Enrollment Period tied to the plan ending, according to Medicare.gov.

That means Dec. 7 should not be presented as the only possible deadline for every affected member. The notice from the plan and Medicare will explain the specific options and dates that apply to that enrollee.

What Members Should Check

The first step is to read the plan’s nonrenewal or service-area notice and verify whether the specific plan will continue in 2027. From there, compare replacement Medicare Advantage options with Original Medicare plus any separate drug or supplemental coverage that may be needed.

The key consumer takeaway is that a plan exit can change benefits even when basic Medicare coverage continues. Members should make an active comparison rather than assume the coverage they have in 2026 will carry over unchanged into 2027.
