Providence Is Closing Its Health Plan and 64,000 Medicare Advantage Members Lose Coverage

Providence Health Plan is shutting down completely. More than 64,000 Medicare Advantage members will lose the plan they are on, and the deal that was supposed to prevent that collapsed in August.

The Deal That Did Not Close

Providence had been negotiating to transfer its Medicare Advantage business to a national insurer. A spokesperson said the agreement fell through despite significant effort on all sides. The company announced the failure on August 19.

Providence had already said it would wind down its commercial and Medicaid lines in 2027. Medicare Advantage was the piece expected to survive. Now it is not.

The Numbers That Do Not Sit Together

The insurance division lost more than $100 million in 2025. Those losses shrank sharply in the first half of 2026, down to $4 million.

Over the same first half of 2026 the Providence system posted $349 million in net income, against a $69 million loss in the same period a year earlier. The system is in far better shape than it was. The health plan is closing anyway.

What Members Have to Do

Medicare Open Enrollment runs from October 15 to December 7. That is the window in which affected members select new coverage for the following year.

Providence has said it is talking with regulators about the closure and will share more details as soon as it is able. Until those details arrive, members do not yet have the specifics of their transition.

The Part That Is Not Yet Answered

Plan terminations generally trigger additional enrollment protections for Medicare beneficiaries. Whether and how those apply here has not been stated by Providence or by regulators, and no member should assume a particular protection until it is confirmed.

What is confirmed is the closure, the count, and the calendar. More than 64,000 people need a different plan, and the enrollment window closes December 7.

Anyone on a Providence Medicare Advantage plan should watch for a non-renewal notice this fall and treat October 15 as the date to start comparing, not the date to start reading.
