A Recruiter Warned Against Iced Coffee at Interviews. The Debate Took Off.

A recruiter warned that bringing iced coffee to a job interview could make candidates look too casual. The response turned a takeaway drink into an argument about professional manners, with some defending the warning and others questioning why a beverage should count against an applicant.

The disagreement is about more than thirst. One side sees a first impression that deserves extra care; the other sees an everyday habit being treated as evidence that someone is not serious about working.

The cup became a signal

Caitlin Wehniainen, who describes herself as a recruiter working with Fortune 500 companies, posted the TikTok on Sept. 16. She argued that arriving with a coffee could make an interview look like one errand among several, rather than a meeting the candidate had prepared for.

The argument continued into late September, including coverage by The Ringer on Sept. 30. Information Age reported that supporters stressed courtesy and avoiding distractions, while critics considered the warning an unnecessary judgment about a normal drink.

Age did not settle the argument

The Independent interviewed people with different views. A manager in her early 50s considered the drink unprofessional, while a 26-year-old questioned how it differed from bringing water. But younger interviewees also raised concerns about spills, condensation and taking an avoidable risk.

Those individual responses show disagreement, rather than a rule that everyone of a particular age thinks alike. Career coach Hannah Salton told the outlet that a drink can contribute to an interviewer’s overall impression, with expectations differing between workplaces.

The recruiter clarified her point

In a LinkedIn follow-up reported by Information Age, Wehniainen said her message concerned avoiding distractions, rather than declaring coffee drinkers bad candidates. That clarification leaves the central dispute intact: whether interviewers are reading preparation from a cup, or reading too much into it.
