Sean Combs and a New York law firm that represented him in a $100 million civil defamation lawsuit are now disputing why the attorney-client relationship ended. The firm says Combs left a substantial balance of fees, costs and expenses unpaid for more than six months, while Combs says he chose to replace the lawyers because he believed they were overbilling him.
The Firm Asked to Withdraw From the Case
The Guardian reported that Sher Tremonte filed in federal court to withdraw from representing Combs. In the filing, partner Michael Tremonte said there had been a breakdown in communication and cooperation and that Combs had not made himself available for substantive discussions during several months.
The firm also said a substantial balance remained unpaid. The filing concerns representation in Combs’ $100 million defamation lawsuit, a separate civil case that remains pending.
Combs Gives a Different Reason for the Split
Through representatives, Combs said he decided to switch lawyers because he objected to charges he described as excessive and unapproved. He characterized the disagreement as a business dispute over billing rather than simply a refusal to pay.
Tremonte rejected that account and said the firm’s invoices were long overdue. The two sides therefore agree on one basic fact - the relationship has broken down - while sharply disagreeing over who caused it and what money is legitimately owed.
The Fee Dispute Adds Another Layer to the Civil Case
A change in counsel can alter the pace and strategy of any major lawsuit, and this one already carries a nine-figure damages figure. The court will have to address the firm’s withdrawal while the underlying defamation claims continue.
For now, the unresolved question is no longer limited to the $100 million lawsuit itself. It also includes what Combs owes the lawyers who had been handling it and whether their departure changes how the case moves forward.
