Social Security has confirmed a 3.6% cost-of-living increase for 2027, equivalent to about $75 more per month for the average retired worker. The Social Security Administration estimates the adjustment will affect 76 million people across retirement, survivor, disability and Supplemental Security Income programs. The new amount each person receives depends on their current benefit, so $75 is not a uniform payment.

Nearly 72 million Social Security beneficiaries will see the increase beginning with January benefits. Approximately 7.3 million SSI recipients will receive their increased payments beginning December 31, 2026. Some people receive both types of benefits, which is why the population totals should not simply be added together.

The Social Security Administration’s fact sheet puts the estimated average retired-worker benefit at $2,095 before the 2027 adjustment and $2,170 afterward. For couples where both people receive benefits, the estimated combined average rises from $3,238 to $3,355, an increase of $117 a month. These figures describe national averages; a retiree receiving a smaller or larger current payment will see a different dollar change.

When the exact amount becomes visible

The SSA says people with personal my Social Security accounts can view personalized cost-of-living notices beginning in late November. Those who do not use the online notice system will receive mailed notices in December. The agency has promoted a simplified one-page notice that shows the individual’s benefit amount, relevant deductions and payment information.

For someone who wants access to an online notice, the agency has identified November 18 as the deadline to create an account and select paperless delivery for this cycle. The date matters because it offers an earlier look at the benefit amount, not because missing it cancels the annual increase. The adjustment itself is automatic for eligible recipients.

The same annual update changes several earnings thresholds. For people who claim retirement benefits before full retirement age and continue working, the earnings-test exempt amount rises from $24,480 in 2026 to $25,560 in 2027. For the year a person reaches full retirement age, the applicable limit rises from $65,160 to $67,920, with a separate withholding rule that applies before that birthday month. The Social Security payroll-tax maximum rises from $184,500 to $192,300. The retirement earnings test no longer applies after full retirement age.

More than one number changes

Supplemental Security Income recipients have different payment dates and figures from retired workers. The federal individual SSI payment standard rises from $994 to $1,029 for 2027. Social Security beneficiaries should use their individual benefit notices to determine their new payments rather than interpreting a national average as a guaranteed increase.

The earnings-test and payroll-tax thresholds operate under different rules from the cost-of-living adjustment. A retiree already at full retirement age is not subject to the same earnings-test limit, and workers above the payroll-tax maximum face a different calculation. The official SSA fact sheet lists the individual thresholds for 2027.

The agency calculates the annual adjustment using a measure of inflation set in federal law. The headline percentage therefore reflects a national formula rather than an individual assessment of grocery, rent or medical bills. People enrolled in Medicare should also review their premium deductions when notices arrive, because the deposited Social Security amount may differ from the gross benefit shown before deductions.
