Some Medicare Beneficiaries Are Due a 90 Dollar Rebate

Some Medicare beneficiaries are receiving a one-time $90 premium rebate in October 2026, but the payment is not going to every person enrolled in Medicare. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services says eligibility is limited to certain Part B beneficiaries, and payment method affects when the money arrives.

Most eligible recipients were expected to receive $90 by direct deposit around October 8. Those without direct deposit may receive a paper Treasury check later in October.

What the $90 payment covers

CMS describes the payment as a premium rebate connected to its Medicare Improvement Fund initiative. It is intended to offset part of an eligible beneficiary’s Part B costs, the portion of Medicare generally associated with physician and outpatient services.

It is a single payment, not a recurring $90 reduction in every month’s Medicare premium. And it is not the same as the annual Social Security cost-of-living adjustment or the premium a person owes after income-related adjustments.

The agency says eligible people receiving direct deposits generally get the rebate automatically, while some beneficiaries are sent a check from the U.S. Treasury. Those checks carry a description identifying the payment as a Medicare Improvement Fund payment.

Why a neighbor might get money when you do not

CMS describes the recipients as approximately 20.8 million people who live in the United States and have Original Medicare Part B, rather than Medicare Advantage. Its FAQ also identifies Medicaid assistance with Part B premiums and income-related monthly adjustment amounts (IRMAA) as eligibility conditions: people receiving Medicaid premium assistance or paying an IRMAA surcharge should verify whether they qualify instead of assuming the rebate will arrive.

The easiest first check is whether a person has Original Medicare Part B, receives help from Medicaid paying that premium, or pays the higher-income IRMAA surcharge.

CMS directs beneficiaries to call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) with eligibility questions. For payment status, it directs them to the Social Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213, beginning October 15. Those official contacts are more useful than social-media posts promising to unlock a check for a fee.

Watch for imitation payment notices

A real Treasury payment does not require an individual to wire money, buy gift cards or disclose banking passwords to a stranger. The difference between a legitimate program and a fraudulent solicitation is particularly important when checks are arriving by mail.

Readers who receive a communication about the rebate should verify it through official Medicare information, not through telephone numbers supplied in an unsolicited message.

The payment sits alongside ordinary Part B bills

The standard Medicare Part B premium in 2026 is $202.90 a month, according to CMS. A one-time $90 payment therefore offsets only part of one month’s standard premium for a person who qualifies; it does not replace the ordinary premium bill or change annual deductibles. The distinction matters for beneficiaries who already see Part B premiums deducted from their monthly Social Security benefits: a separate deposit or check is not the same as a permanent change to that deduction.
