Trump Renamed Lake Ontario and Said All He Needs Now Is an Ocean
Thomas Hale
Updated Sep 3, 2026
President Trump signed an executive order on Thursday, August 27, directing the federal government to rename Lake Ontario as Lake America. The order is framed as effective immediately, though it also sets out administrative steps that have to happen first.
The Reason He Gave
The order itself does not carry an explicit stated reason. Trump pointed to trade.
We deal with a lot of people, he said, and people oftentimes they’ll ask me, who’s the worst to deal with on trade? And I said, that’s easy, Canada.
The Second Rename in Two Years
This follows the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America last year. Trump connected the two directly, saying we have a gulf, and we have a lake, now all we need is an ocean.
The pattern matters more than either individual name. Renaming shared geography has become a recurring instrument of this trade dispute rather than a one-off.
What a Federal Name Change Actually Reaches
An executive order directs federal agencies. It governs how the United States government labels a feature on its own maps, charts and documents.
Lake Ontario is not a United States feature. It sits on the border, with Ontario on the northern shore, and Canada is under no obligation to adopt a name the American government assigns. The practical result of the Gulf of America order was a split naming convention, with US federal materials using one name and much of the rest of the world using the other.
Where This Sits in the Larger Fight
The order lands in the middle of an escalating trade dispute. Canada announced retaliatory tariffs of up to 50 percent on roughly $20 billion in US goods, effective September 8, after the United States imposed 50 percent tariffs on about $20 billion in Canadian imports.
The tariffs move money. The name does not. What the order does is signal that the dispute has moved past economics into symbolism, and that is usually a sign a negotiation is not going well.
