Police Had to Confirm the Cat in the Hat Is Not Prowling Irish Driveways

Police in County Wexford spent part of last week telling residents that a children’s book character was not lurking outside their homes.

They had reason to. Videos circulating on social media appeared to show Dr. Seuss’s Cat in the Hat peering through windows and pursuing people down Irish streets. They had the look of security footage, and some people who saw them were not sure.

People Were Genuinely Asking

The concern was real enough to show up in community forums. In a Gorey group, one Facebook user wrote: “Just a bit concerned…I was wondering if anyone has any clue.”

The clips were attached to recognisable places - Wexford, Curracloe, Enniscorthy, Gorey - which is what made them land. A parody post warning of a “Cat in the Hat fraud” targeting homes in the area spread alongside them.

Why They Looked Convincing

Because they were built to. The footage was produced with consumer AI video tools, which can now drop a character into a familiar-looking street scene in about one step.

The tells are there once you know them: watermarks from generators including Veo, Sora and Kling, backgrounds that hold unnaturally still, and small details that appear and vanish between frames. Nobody in a costume was involved, and no verified incident has been reported.

The Garda Statement

Wexford Gardaí addressed it on their own Facebook page, confirming that the Cat in the Hat “was not in your driveway while you were out and he is not currently hiding out in Curracloe.”

The force explained that the material was “essentially an AI prompt that places the character into images/videos of familiar places.”

That is the part worth sitting with. The images were convincing enough that a police force decided its public voice was better spent denying a cartoon than ignoring it.

Ireland Has Been Here Before

On Halloween night in 2024, thousands of people gathered in central Dublin for a parade that did not exist. The listing had been generated by an AI content site and spread through search results and social posts. The crowds were large enough to shut the Luas Red and Green lines for roughly half an hour, and Gardaí had to ask people to disperse safely.
